Snowshoeing excursions in Cortina d'Ampezzo

The origin of the snowshoes, known as "ciaspe" or "ciaspole" in the local dialect, dates back to the prehistoric times. Historians believe that the forerunners of our snowshoes were invented and used by huntsmen, farmers and woodsmen in the cold and snowy northern areas of Asia, Canada and North America approximately 6000 years ago.

Traditional snowshoes were made by craftsmen, they had a wooden frame with rawhide lacings and worked by distributing the person's weight over a larger area so that the feet do not sink too much into the fresh snow. Modern snowshoes are similar in shape but different in the material. Many different models are available: from the cheaper ones, made of plastic, to the more performing and expensive ones, made of lightweight metal.

As the time has passed, also the purpose of this type of snow footwear has changed: the snowshoes are currently used during leisure excursions or sport competitions. The strongest point of snowshoeing is that it does not require any specific technical skill, can be performed in easily accessible mountain areas with any weather condition and the equipment needed is undoubtedly affordable.
