Ski mountaineering excursion to Tre Cime di Lavaredo, traverse of the three mountain passes

An amazing ski mountaineering itinerary to the renowned Tre Cime di Lavaredo, particularly aimed at mountaineers who are willing to test their skills in a majestic, challenging environment.

The itinerary traverses the mountain passes between the three peaks of the Torri di Lavaredo, from North towards South and viceversa. The excursion requires advanced skiing and mountaineering techniques, as it includes steep slopes in narrow couloirs, in a harsh and highly challenging Alpine environment.

The consecutive ascents of all of the mountain passes located between the peaks of Tre Cime di Lavaredo were completed for the first time in 2012 by Mario Dibona, one of our Dolomiti SkiRock Mountain Guides, together with Giorgio Masetti, who has joined Mario in several mountaineering adventures.

Information about the ski mountaineering excursion to Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The excursion starting point is the town of Cortina, from where you will take the road Strada Statale 48 towards Passo Tre Croci and Misurina and finally reach Lake Antorno (45 minutes ride). From the foreyard of the mountain hut Rifugio Lago di Antorno, take the snowmobile or start ski mountaineering along the snowy trail that leads up to Rifugio Auronzo.

From Rifugio Auronzo, a long traverse almost flat in its eastern part leads to another mountain hut, Rifugio Lavaredo, from where it is possible to climb up the slope that leads to the rill located between two of the peaks of the Tre Cime: Torre Piccola and Torre Grande di Lavaredo.

Once you have reached the top of the rill, descend along the face which exposed northwards. You need to climb down with the rope for the first ten metres and then you can start skiing down the steep couloir, to reach the foot of the imposing north face of Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Proceed westwards along the rock face to reach the second rill, which lies between the peaks Cima Grande and Cima Ovest. Ascend to the reach the top of the rill and then descend skiing along the narrow couloir, which is exposed southwards.

At the bottom of the couloir, proceed westwards along a panoramic traverse that leads to the bottom of the third rill, located between the peaks Cima Ovest and Croda del Rifugio. Ascend the rill to the top and then descend towards North, off-piste skiing in the amazing powder snow until you reach the small mountain hut Malga Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

On the right side of the hut, the itinerary goes on with a spectacular off-piste skiing descent along perfect slopes, exposed northwards and north-westwards, and finally reaches the valley Val Rienza, which leads close to the hotel Albergo Tre Cime. From there, you can go back to the car park Lake Antorno by taxi or by car, if you had previously parked a second car in the vicinity of the hotel.
