Ski mountaineering excursion to the peaks of Cadini di Misurina, across the mountain passes Forcella di Pogoffa and Forcella degli Angeli

The Cadini di Misurina mountain group is the perfect example of the peculiar Dolomites' environment, with sharp pinnacles, high mountain passes, ravines and valleys. The location of this mountain group is amazing: it lies between some of the most famous peaks of the Dolomites and from there it is possible to enjoy amazing views of Monte Cristallo to the west, Monte Sorapiss to the south-west, Marmarole to the south-east and Tre Cime di Lavaredo to the north.

Cadini di Misurina, together with Lake Misurina, which is located at the foot of the mountain group, are particularly fascinating and evocative because of the ancient tales and legends that the people of the Dolomites have been passing on to the children since a very long time and that can also be found in several books.

These majestic mountains are a paradise for the ski mountaineering lovers, as the terrain is perfect for practicing this sport. The possible itineraries are numerous: from the easiest ones, suitable for beginners, to the more difficult and challenging paths, suitable for expert, trained and technically skilled mountaineers.

Information about the ski mountaineering excursion to the peaks of Cadini di Misurina, across the mountain passes Forcella di Pogoffa and Forcella degli Angeli

The excursion starting point is Cortina D'Ampezzo, from where we will take the road Strada Statale 48 that leads up to the mountain pass Passo Tre Croci and to the town of Misurina.

The ski mountaineering excursion to Cadini di Misurina includes two possible itineraries: the easier excursion to the mountain pass Forcella di Pogoffa and the more difficult and technically demanding rill to the pass Forcella degli Angeli, suitable for expert skiers.

The starting point of both of the itineraries is a former cable car, which is now abandoned and known as "Torre del Diavolo" (Devil's tower), at an altitude of 1756 metres.

The first part of the ascending itinerary goes along either the former ski slope, which used to be part of the ski area and is now closed, or the trail that traverses the ski slope and goes up through the woods. Once you ave reached the summit, you will enter the wide rill that leads up to the pass Forcella della Neve.

Approximately halfway up the rill, on the right side, a wide and steep slope begins, leading up below some boulders and rocks emerging from the snow. After this narrow section, the ascending path continues to reach the summit of Forcella di Pogoffa, 2622 metres a.s.l..

The narrow rill that leads up to Forcella degli Angeli lies below the pass Forcella Pogoffa but on the same, right side, and can easily be spotted once you have entered the wide rill that reaches Forcella della Neve. This second couloir is very steep, with a slope of 40°. It is possible to ascend it with the ski skins, going back and forth in order to circumvent the terrain obstacles, while the final section is to be ascended on foot, carrying the skis and wearing ice crampons in case the snow was frozen.

For both of the itineraries, the descending path is the same as the ascending one.
