Climbing the Dibona Aiguille and Barres des Écrins

For years I have been yearning to see and climb a mountain as incredibly beautiful as the Dibona Aiguille in the Ecrins Range. This peak is known all over the world for its shape, elegance and grandeur, and I wanted to get to know it mainly because in 1913 it had been climbed for the first time by Angelo Dibona, a distant relative of mine”.

Mario Dibona

My friend Giorgio and I scheduled a four-day long small expedition to France, to climb two among the most beautiful and famous mountains in Europe. The first climb tackled the Dibona Aiguille, which did not include any particular technical difficulty, featuring a nice runout climb up to the summit at 3130 meters.

From the Dibona Aiguille summit we moved to the great glacier in the Barres des Écrins Range at 4102 meters, entirely located in France. We left the lodge at 3:30 in the morning and we confronted the first section of the mountain on very steep snowy slopes, and we reached the summit at about 8:30 am following a quite sharp and narrow rocky ridge.
