Complete via ferrata to the Middle Tofana

The 2344 m Middle Tofana is the highest peak in Cortina, slightly topping its two neighborining sister: Tofana di Rozes reaches 3225 meters and Tofana di Dentro 3238 meters.

To reach the top you can choose among several possibilities, but surely the most beatiful and coveted itinerary calls for the connection of three consecutive vie ferrate: Via Ferrata Olivieri to Punta Anna, Via Ferrata Aglio and Via Ferrata to the Middle Tofana.

A long and spectacular climb along rocky spurs, vertical faces, runout crossings and metal aiders.

This route is certainly recommended to well trained and expert climbers.

Information on the Complete Via Ferrata to the Middle Tofana

Starting at the large parking lot at the Dibona Lodge, we follow trail #421, which climbs steeply, reaching the Pomedes Lodge. Once we reach it, we continue climbing up to the base of the face where the Via Ferrata Olivieri starts.

When we reach 2773 m at the top of Punta Anna, we follow the ridge along the red dots. First we downclimb (there is the possibility to leave the route and go towards the Giussani Lodge) then we climb up the Southern face until we are in sight of the lifts in Ra Valles.

We continue on a rocky trail up to a metal aider leaning on the face leading to Punta Aglio. By a difficult and runout traverse just above, we reach the great natural arch called “Bus di Tofana”. We keep following the Via Ferrata until we reach a beautiful and panoramic ledge facing the Tofana di Rozes.

Going past a second natural arch and more bolted stretches, we reach the cross on top of the Middle Tofana witha view nothing short of spectacular! We go back down to Cortina by cable car; however, if we must retrieve the car at the Dibona Lodge we go down to Ra Valles by cable car, climb back up a few hundred meters along the ski run and downclimb on the way back by the easy via ferrata Olivieri to Pomedes Lodge, then we follow the trail leading to the Dibona Lodge.

We must remember that we must reach the top by 4:30 p.m. to catch the last cablecar ride at 4:45 p.m. or else we must overnight at the cable car station where cots and blankets are available.

Travel time to the top by via ferrata is approximately 5 hours; total time to the top from the Dibona Lodge is about 6 hours.

Support points are: the Dibona Lodge and the Lodges at Pomedes, Middle Tofana and Ra Valles.
