Ski Mountaineering to the Costabella Crest in Monte Cristallo

The north side of the Creste Bianche in Monte Cristallo used to offer many different runs in fresh snow for the fans of off-piste and freeride skiing. Every run had an elevation gain of 1500 meters and could be easily reached on the old chairlift taking skiers up to 3000 meters at Rifugio Lorenzi.

Since they had to close the lift for lack of permits and tests, this beautiful mountain amphitheater, full of ski runs, narrow couloirs over 50 degrees steep, wide and smooth valleys, passes and ridges, is accessible only to ski mountaineering fans.

A fantastic location offering countless itineraries with everchanging runs climbing up and down.

Information on the ski mountaineering excursion to Costabella Crest in Monte Cristallo

From the large parking lot at Rio Gere we take the chairlift reaching 2215 meters at Rifugio Son Forca.

Once the seal skins are on, we climb along the old ski slope Staunies to the descent system half way down the couloir. Then we climb on the left valley taking us to 2870 meters at Forcella Grande.

From the pass we descend on the right until we reach just below the Costabella slope. We climb this rather steep slope reaching the spectacular aerial ridge that will take us to the beginning of the descent.

The first part of the descent is pretty steep, about 38 degrees, up to the entrance of the beautiful valley descending until it narrows into a small riverbed. Then keeping on the right and going across we enter a forest leading us near the cross country trail.

Following the trail we reach the Ploner Hotel where we had previously left a car for the return.
