Ski Mountaineering Excursion on the Lienz Dolomites

The so called Lienz Dolomites get their name for the likeness of their rock and mainly for their closeness to the more famous Dolomites. They cover an area 40 km long in Eastern Tyrol, from the Kartitscher Sattel Forcella to the Gailberg. The whole mountain range is located south of Lienz, the capital of Eastern Tyrol. This wide area is a special place for ski mountaineers, offering a wide range of different itineraries, from steep and difficult slopes to nice and easy runs. These beautiful excursions are surrounded by nature in sight of a great rocky amphitheater whose peaks reach 2700 meters.

This excursion is ideal for those who want to spend a relaxing day without dangers or technical sections. Just be aware of the elevation gain, which amounts to about 1000 meters.

Information on the Excursion to Leitmariterspitze

From the large town of Lienz, we follow a secondary road leading to the little town of Tristach. Then, following the directions to Dolomitihutte, we reach a toll parking where the shuttle cars leave for Dolomitihutte (10 euro per person).

As we leave the lodge, we continue on a snowy road gently climbing to the edge of the forest where we enter the great rocky amphitheater that takes us to Karisbaderhutte at 2260 meters (closed during winter season). We continue along the beautiful and wide valley leading to a pass, then to the summit of Leitmariterspitze at 2596 meters. We negotiate the beautiful down run mostly along the upward trail.
