Sentiero Ferrato Ivano Dibona to Mount Cristallo

The Sentiero Ferrato Ivano Dibona is a long and amazing itinerary that has no rivals in the Dolomites, as for both its natural environment and historical relevance.

Along the whole path, that includes bridges, ladders, crests and ledges, it is possible to see the ruins of the First World War military positions where the Italian soldiers remained for two years, succeeding in keeping military control of the border.

Crossing the suspension bridge "Ponte Cristallo", a wooden boardwalk hanging at 3000 metres, is a unique experience not to be missed.

Information about the Sentiero Ferrato Ivano Dibona to Mount Cristallo

The Sentiero Ferrato Ivano Dibona is mostly a descending path without any particular technical difficulty. It stretches along the crest line from Forcella Staunies of Monte Cristallo to reach Ospitale, passing various peaks: Cresta Bianca, Padeon, Vecio del Forame, Forame de Inze.

The itinerary is quite long, thus suitable for well-trained hikers, and includes some spectacular viewpoints, from where to admire the peaks Croda Rossa di Ampezzo, Tofane and Gruppo del Sorapiss.

The excursion starting point is Rio Gere, where it is possible to take the cable car to reach Rifugio Lorenzi, a mountain hut clinging on the rocks at an altitude of almost 3000 metres. Once arrived at Ospitale, it is possible to come back by bus or second car previously parked on the spot. Moreover, approximately at the halfway point of the itinerary, it is possible to return to the lifts of Monte Cristallo with the Son Forca chair lift.

The itinerary duration time can vary from six to eight hours, for an overall elevation loss of approximately 1600 metres.

We recommend that hikers bring with them plenty of water provisions, as there are no water springs along the path.

The mountain huts along the path and nearby offering facilities and food are the following:

  • Rifugio Lorenzi
  • Rifugio Ospitale
  • Rifugio Son Forca
