Ortles climbing route Via del Coston

The Ortles massif is located in the Stelvio Nature Park, it is 3905 metre high, the highest and most renowned peak of the South Tyrol region, that was firstly ascended back in 1804 .

There is plenty of climbing routes ascending this mountain, among which the amazing Via del Coston, an ice and rock climbing route along the Hintergrat crest.

The route Via del Coston is a tough itinerary, with vertical technically demanding pitches. The key pitch is a eight metre crack, which is IV grade of difficulty.

The final part of the route is amazing, it approaches to the summit along a sharp, snowy and icy edge.

During the spring and summer seasons the Dolomiti SkiRock Mountain Guides lead groups of mountaineers to climb the route Via del Coston on a two-day exciting excursion.

Programme

Day 1
The excursion starting point is the typical mountain village of Solda (1900 metres), where it is possible to visit the renowned Reinhold Messner mountaineering museum. Park your car in the big cableway parking but then, instead of taking the lift to the Rifugio Citta di Milano, start walking along the trail and then turn right to ascend the slopes. After two hours walk you will reach the hut Rifugio Coston, 2661 metres a.s.l..

Day 2
You will leave the mountain hut at dawn and cross a first gravelly slope that leads to the rocky Hintergrat crest. The climbing terrain is both ice and rocks, the difficulty level of this route is II and III grade, with one IV grade pitch. This climbing route will lead you to the summit of mount Ortler (3905 metres). Then descend on the normal route along the snowy north-west peak, across crevasses and some climbing pitches equipped with fixed steel cables, to reach the hut Rifugio Payer (3029 metres).
