Mountaineering excursion on Dolomites, Giro del Sorapiss

An amazing two-day mountaineering excursion on Dolomites around the Sorapiss mountain group, which includes a central massif with the peak Punta Sorapiss (3205 metres), and some other peaks such as Croda Marcora (3154 metres) and Tre Sorelle (3005 metres).

It is a varied, circular itinerary in an amazing, unspoilt natural environment that allows climbers to enjoy wonderful panoramic views: the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Gruppo delle Marmarole eastwards, the peaks of the Belluno province southwards and finally, westwards, the most renowned Dolomites summits, such as Monte Antelao, Monte Pelmo, Croda da Lago, Tofane, Monte Civetta and Marmolada.

Information about the Giro del Sorapiss, a mountaineering excursion on Dolomites

The Dolomiti SkiRock guides highly recommend this itinerary, as it is amazingly panoramic and is technically challenging. The path includes steep trails, overhanging gravelly ledges and two via ferratas: Via Ferrata Berti to Croda Marcora and Via Ferrata Vandelli to Croda del Fogo.

The starting and arrival point is the mountain pass Passo Tre Croci.

The circular itinerary is to be walked through in clockwise direction, getting firstly to the turquoise lake Vandelli and from there to the starting point of the Via Ferrata Vandelli, that goes up to the summit of Croda del Fogo. You will stay overnight in the cozy mountain hut Rifugio San Marco, which is very popular among climbers for its tasty traditional cuisine.

The second day you will start hiking early in the morning, going along the ledge Cengia del Banco after having climbed down the Via Ferrata Berti to reach the Terrazza del Sorapiss, a wonderful panoramic point. From there, an enjoyable gravelly trail on a mild slope will lead you back to the lake and then to the staring point Passo Tre Croci.

This itinerary is suitable for well-trained and physically fit hikers, who have a good knowledge of the mountain territory and of the rocky terrains. The excursion is quite demanding, as you will be walking from six to eight hours each day.

The mountain huts along the path and nearby offering facilities and food are the following:

  • Rifugio Vandelli
  • Rifugio San Marco
