Mount Pelmo ski mountaineering excursion

The Monte Pelmo (3168 metres) was the first Dolomites ascent of the Irish mountaineer John Bail, who climbed it on 19 September 1857. On the east face of this mountain there is a large glacier that looks like a huge seat: this is the reaon why the mountain is known in the regional dialect as Caregon del Padreterno (God's seat).

The ski mountaineering excursions on the north face of Monte Pelmo are highly enjoyable, their itineraries stretch out below the vertical cliffs and then turn towards the mountain passes Forcella d'Arcia and Forca Rossa.

Information about the ski mountaineering excursion Forca Rossa to Monte Pelmo

This ski mountaineering itinerary starts at the car park close to Passo Staulanza. From there, ascend the moraine cliff and then turn left, going along the base of Monte Pelmo towards the Forcelle (mountain passes).

Here you have two different possibilities: either ascend to the pass Forcella d'Arcia, which is less high than the other one thus less demanding, or ascend the Forcella di Forca Rossa through a longer and more attractive itinerary, that is accessible only when the snowpack is perfectly stable and safe.

From the summit it is possible to enjoy an amazing and varied panoramic view: southwards you can see the Boite valley and the majestic Monte Antelao, northwards the peaks of Marmolada and Sasso Lungo.

The descent is highly enjoyable, its first part is steep and requires more technical experience, while the second part of the decline is wider and milder.
