Complete Tour of the Three Tofanas

The complete tour of the Tofanas is a splendid 3-day itinerary interweaving the Three Tofanas in Cortina d'Ampezzo along ferratas, trails, ledges and moves carved in the rocks during World War I. The Three Sisters are next to each other and stand over 3000 meters high: Tofana di Rozes at 3225 meters, Middle Tofana at 3224, and Tofana di Dentro at 3238.

The ferratas are the best in the Dolomites, perfectly bolted and safe: like the Lipella ferrata going through the historic tunnel of the Castelletto; and the Olivieri ferrata reaching Punta Anna, that follows a beautiful exposed ridge and continues up to the top of the Middle Tofana passing near Punta Aglio.

Staying overnight on top of the Middle Tofana at the arrival station just beyond the Freccia del Cielo cable car is just thrilling. We camp out a step away from heaven where we can enjoy one of the most beautiful spectacle Nature can offer: the Enrosadira, an event on display when the rocky faces of the Dolomites take on a chromatic spectrum from pale yellow to fire red, dying down to different shades of purple, then completely disappearing in the dark of the night.

At dawn the spectacle continues with the sunrise behind the immense Antelao, forming beams of light standing out in the clear morning light.

Program of the Complete Tour of the Three Tofanas

Day1

We leave from the Dibona Lodge at an elevation of 2000 meters following a scenic trail to the Castelletto tunnel which was built by the Italian Army during the Great War. Once we exit the tunnel we follow the wide ledge leading to the start of the Giovanni Lipella via Ferrata. The ferrata has a medium level of difficulty. First it takes us to the Tre Dita (Three Fingers), then on top of the Tofana di Rozes at 3225 meters. The view is majestic to say the least, and we are able see all the peaks in the Dolomites. We hike down from the summit by cliffs and trails reaching 2600 meters at the Giussani Lodge where we spend the night in comfortable 4-bed rooms with shower, enjoying delicious cuisine. The total time for the excursion is about 7 hours.

Day 2

From the Lodge we hike down reaching the Astaldi via ferrata following it to the start of the Olivieri Ferrata to Punta Anna, a beautiful ferrata that follows a sharp ridge up to the summit at 2743 meters. Then we continue towards Punta Aglio on a very exposed and technical traverse leading to the Bus de Tofana, a natural arch in the mountain. We keep on climbing on ledges and a few stretches of via ferrata up to 3242 meters at the top of the Middle Tofana. We spend the night at the top station of the cable car, an unforgettable evening thanks to Dolomiti SkiRock. We provide for all the essentials for the bivouac among friends, providing warm sleeping bags for the night, water for washing, the greatest dinner and a full breakfast. The total time for the excursion is 7 hours.

Day 3

From the Middle Tofana along a ledge we reach a pass dividing the Two Tofanas. Always by via ferrata we climb to the top of the Tofana di Dentro at 3238 meters where we can find trenches and many artifacts. We keep going on the way down following the gravel trail to the shoulder of the Formenton; here we start the trail carved into the rock by Italian soldiers. A long traverse beneath the vertical faces of the Tofana leads us to Ra Valles and then, along the easy via ferrata Olivieri, we return to our starting point at the Dibona Lodge. The total time for the excursion is about 7 hours.
