Via ferrata and off-piste skiing in Vallon de Tofana

A new via ferrata has recently been opened on the South face of Tofana di Mezzo, taking advantage of the natural ledges and equipping the vertical walls with iron ladders fixed on the rock.

This itinerary is actually beautiful, technical and enjoyable. In winter, it allows to reach the Forcella del Vallon de Tofana, the starting point of a spectacular off-piste skiing slope that, from Punta Giovannina, reaches the mountain hut Rifugio Dibona.

Information about the via ferrata and off-piste skiing excursion in Vallon de Tofana

The itinerary starting point is Bus de Tofana, which can be reached by taking the Tofane cable car and then with an additional 20 minute walk.

Once arrived on the edge, wear your crampons, climbing harness and ferrata gear and start descending a few metres south in order to reach the safety steel cable.

The via ferrata follows the beautiful ledge along the whole southern rock face of Tofana di Mezzo and offers to the climbers an amazing view of the magnificent Tofana di Rozes.

At the end of the ledge, you will have to descend approximately 50 metres and enter the Vallon de Tofana.  From there, ascend the last 150 metres and eventually reach the summit.

Under good weather conditions, the descent is enjoyable and does not present major difficulties: the path is traced on a long slope of more than 900 metre elevation loss.

Technical information about the descent:

  • Difficulty level: demanding
  • Average slope: 35°
  • Descent overall elevation loss: 900 metres
  • Southerly exposure
