Ferrata Formenton to Tofana di Mezzo and Tofana Terza

The Via Ferrata Formenton is a beautiful high-altitude mountain traverse that reaches two summits over 3000 metres a.s.l.: the Tofana di Mezzo (3242 metres) and the Tofana Terza  (3238 metres).

The itinerary is spectacular and majestic, with an incredible landscape and a wonderful view over the Marmolada glacier.

This via ferrata is accessible to the vast majority of mountaineers, as it is a medium level of difficulty, but it has to be undertaken only with the best weather conditions and it must be pointed out that, at the beginning of the season, snow is still to be found in some stretches of the itinerary.

Information about the Via Ferrata Formenton

The via ferrata is equipped with steel cables and has plenty of natural handholds. The most peculiar part of the itinerary is the natural bridge that links Tofana di Mezzo and Tofana Terza. The elevation gain is approximately 200 metres.

Climbers will descend along the north face, where it is still possible to see some ruins that date back to the First World War and the rocky and brittle terrain requires the most careful attention.

The via ferrata can easily be reached with the Freccia nel Cielo cable car.

The time required to complete Ferrata Formenton is approximately two hours and a half, while the overall duration time of the excursion is five hours.

The mountain huts along the path and nearby, offering facilities and food, are the following:

  • Rifugio Pomedes
  • Rifugio Duca D'Aosta
  • Rifugio Cima Tofana
  • Rifugio Ra Valles
