Ferrata Averau to Monte Averau

To make it to the summit of Monte Averau it is necessary to climb a medium level via ferrata about 100 meter in length. The bolted section is located at the base of the mountain and ends on a large rocky amphitheater.

After completing the via ferrata, we keep going along a gravelly trail, with small and easy cliffs and we finally reach the cross on the summit.

Once we get to the summit of Monte Averau, the view is amazing, encompassing 360 degrees: clockwise we can see the Marmolada with its glacier, Piz Boè, Tofana di Rozes, Cristallo, Antelao, Pelmo, and Civetta, each and every one reaching above 3000 meters. We climb down following along the upward trail.

Information on the Via Ferrata Averau

To reach the Ferrata Averau there are several options. Dolomiti SkiRock recommends two.

The first starts from the large parking lot at Bai de Dones, a 30-minute drive from Cortina, where we take the chairlift taking us to Rifugio Scoiattoli at 2200 meters. From here, we start walking along an easy trail reaching Rifugio Averau, the starting point of the trail leading to the ferrata.

The climbing time to the starting point of the ferrata is about 1 hour and 15 minutes; the ferrata section is about 20 minutes, while the trail leading to the top requires about 30 minutes. The total route time to complete this itinerary both ways is about 4 hours.

The second option, slightly longer but beautiful, starts from Passo Falzarego and follows the ridge of Col Gallina, along trail #441, skirting the small but distinctive Lago Limides. This itinerary takes you below the vertical face of Monte Averau, along the southern side and ends at Rifugio Averau. From there, we head out to the ferrata section and on to the top of the mountain.

The total route time from Passo Falzarego to Rifugio Averau is about 2 hours.
