E-Bike Excursion in the Dolomites along the Old Railroad Tracks

A railroad connecting the Provinces of Belluno and Bolzano used to pass through Cortina until the beginning of the sixties. A small electric train was winding through the mountains, going through tunnels, on suspended bridges, and small stations which are still standing today.

The line was inaugurated on June 15th, 1921. The railroad was immensely popular during the 1956 Olympic Winter Games, carrying athletes, tourists, and even the president of Italy, Mr. Giovanni Gronchi. It closed to the public on May 17, 1964 due to lack of revenue, and after some serious accidents.

Today these tracks have been turned into a perfect bicycle trail: easy to handle, and with ever gentle and regular inclines through the Dolomites, along old bridges and through tunnels that have kept all their historical charm.

Information on the Mountain or E-Bike excursion in the Dolomites along the old railroad tracks

The starting point is located at the old train station in Cortina. There we take a northern direction towards Fiames. We go through two tunnels, and we reach the area of Ospitale. From there, on the left we can see the oldest church in Cortina, built in 1226. About 2 km further, we reach Passo Cimabanche, the divide between the provinces of Belluno and Bolzano.

The return trip to Cortina develops mostly on the same trail up to the Rocca di Bodestagno, where a great mediaeval castle once stood. It is surmised that the first builders of the castle were the Longboards in the VII or VIII century.

The excursion then goes on, skirting the Boite river and getting back to Cortina with ease.
