Matteo Menardi has climbed his first 9a route at the age of 16

A few days ago, on the crag of Gemona del Friuli in northeastern Italy, Matteo Menardi, a young climber from Cortina d'Ampezzo, repeated Nove G, the route freed by Adam Ondra in December 2013 and defined by the Czech climber as 'a difficult 9a route'.

For Matteo this is undoubtedly an outstanding performance, not only because he has completed the route’s first repeat, but also because this crag is located far from his home and, in successfully redpointing the 20m line, he has leaped upwards from his previous 8c max directly to 9a.

Above all though, Menardi’s success comes about at the young age of 16, meaning that he is now the youngest Italian climber ever to have climbed this hallmark grade.
